Abbreviations for the Books of the Bible
Brother Bruno’s biblical quotations from the Old and New Testament are drawn from the translation of the Bible de Jérusalem, (Paris, 1956, revised in 1973,) except when he rectified certain contentious passages. He imitated its system of marginal references to indicate the biblical source of the passage, or its Qurʾānic parallel. In this English translation of Brother Bruno’s analysis, we will quote from various translations of the Bible, choosing the one that most closely resembles the text quoted by Brother Bruno, then rectifying it whenever necessary.
The references to the Bible are in Arabic numerals: the numbers in bold characters indicate the chapters and those in light-faced type, the verses, e.g., Gn 39:15. These references occur either in the text of Brother Bruno’s analysis or they are proposed as marginal references. In this latter case, they are displayed in the red-framed window that appears on the screen in the Level 3 reading mode. The references that appear in this window correspond to the verse of the Qurʾānic text that is activated. To activate a verse of the Qurʾān, click on its number either in the green or blue-framed windows.
Every biblical reference is provided with a hyperlink that allows you immediate access to the text from the Bible.
How to read the biblical references
The abbreviation of the name of the books from the Bible (see chart below,) are followed by two numbers separated by a colon.
Examples:
Is 5:25 |
Refers to The Book of Isaiah, chapter 5, verse 25. |
Ex 32 10-14 |
Refers to The Book of the Exodus, chapter 32, verses 10 to 14 inclusively. |
= Gn 17:1 |
When a biblical reference is preceded by an = sign, this indicates that the author of the Qurʾān is quoting a passage from the Bible. For example, in Sūrah 2 verse 131 he quotes The Book of Genesis, chapter 17, verse 1 in which Yahweh says to Abraham: “Be perfect!” |
Am 5:18 + |
When a biblical reference is followed by a + sign, this indicates that for the verse in question, the Bible de Jérusalem presents a note on this source text that Brother Bruno judges useful for clarifying the theme taken up by the Qurʾān. The hyperlink will give you access to the verse indicated in the reference followed by the text of the note. |
Mt 15:12 sq. |
A reference followed by the letters sq. refers not only to the verse that is indicated but to the following verses as well. |
Tg Gn 17:1 |
A reference preceded by the letters Tg indicates that the quotation is taken from the Targum (an Aramaic translation or paraphrase of a portion of the Old Testament.) |
Tg J Ex 15:8 |
A reference preceded by the letters Tg J indicates that the quotation is taken from the Palestinian Targum. |
